England has gone 72 hours without a universities minister. But don’t panic, Scotland went six weeks without one.

It is almost inevitable that as you begin reading today’s Playbook, a second email (or perhaps a text message, a WhatsApp or a tweet) will cause your phone to buzz, announcing the name of the next universities and science minister.

That is because the second paragraph of today’s dispatch states: We don’t yet know the identity of Sam Gyimah’s replacement. Sod’s law should take care of the rest.
