In March last year, Elizabeth Hinton—an associate professor in the department of history and the department of African and African-American studies at Harvard University—wrote a New York Times opinion piece entitled “Turn Prisons Into Colleges”.
In it, she urged readers to imagine how it would be if prisons looked like the grounds of universities. “Instead of languishing in cells, incarcerated people sat in classrooms and learned about climate science or poetry—just like college students.”
