Playbook investigates a report alleging that universities are registering students to vote without their knowledge

On the day the Labour Party is set to unveil its 2019 manifesto in Birmingham (and the day after the Lib Dems revealed theirs, which we cover here), another old general election chestnut has reared its head: how are universities and their students going to manipulate the system to keep the Tories out of number 10?

It’s a fairly tired old rhetorical question, but one that deserves our attention, since a number of stories have surfaced in recent days that make some very serious accusations about universities’ conduct.
