Sparks fly as the Department for Education is given another statistical ticking off
The Department for Education has had something of a tricky relationship with numbers. In October last year, the UK Statistics Authority (UKSA) reprimanded the then education secretary Damian Hinds for what it termed “serious concerns about the Department for Education’s presentation and use of statistics”.
In a letter to Hinds, the UKSA chair David Norgrove singled out the way ministers had portrayed education funding levels and the performance of UK school in international league tables as two specific examples of where data presentation “[did] not help to promote trust and confidence in official data, and indeed [risked] undermining them”.
