As the Augar report is kicked into the long grass, universities have more pressing concerns.
Today, the people of Peterborough go to the polls to vote in a by-election that has now taken on considerable significance. It has been triggered by a recall petition following the conviction of the sitting Labour MP Fiona Onasanya for perverting the course of justice.
When the writ for the by-election was first moved on 1 May, Labour might have had a reasonable expectation of holding the seat. It is a marginal one that they took in the 2017 election by only 607 votes, in a two-horse race with the Conservatives. However, there are now the European Union election results and the Brexit Party to contend with.
