The Supreme Court ruling distracts from the higher education talk at the Labour Party conference.

What a difference a day makes, as Dinah Washington once sang. Yesterday morning, when Playbook was making its way to the University and College Union session on “the new politics of education” at the Labour Party conference, the skies over Brighton were slate grey and the waves were breaking on the sea front as if a great storm was heading our way, or at least a scheduled speech by deputy leader Tom Watson.

The doormen in the hotels on the Kings Road, huddled from the cold, heads bowed like damp crows as conference goers struggled through a gale blowing along the parade. Perhaps, the out of season weather had forced delegates indoors and when Playbook made it to the Victoria Terrace in the Grand Hotel for the panel, the room was already full.
