Michelle Donelan addresses higher education

It is now 70 days since two people, one a student at the University of York, became the first in the UK to test positive for coronavirus. It is 40 days since the first Briton—a man who had been aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan—died with the virus, and 34 days since the first death on UK soil.

According to figures announced yesterday, 55,242 cases have now been confirmed in the UK, while 6,159 people have died. Both of these figures will, in reality, be far higher. The pace at which this crisis has escalated is terrifying, and it continues to move at speed.
