The government has confirmed how it plans to implement the return of student number controls

Yesterday evening at 6.21pm, just as Playbook was reaching over to press the standby button and crack open a can of its favourite County Durham-based ale, an email from the Department for Education press office popped up in our inbox with the heading “Student number controls”.

The beer was returned whence it came, and Microsoft Word reopened. While we had planned to lead today’s dispatch with two highly newsworthy reports—one on how Covid-19 has affected trust in scientists, and one from the Quality Assurance Agency on how universities and colleges are preparing for the post-pandemic academic year—it was clear that they simply would not cut the mustard if the UK government had laid out the detail of how its long-awaited numbers cap would operate.
