The Newton Fund and development research could be casualties of a Whitehall reshuffle

First, the good news. Yesterday evening, the Home Office announced “temporary concessions” to its Tier 4 visa regulations in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. International students starting a distance or digitally delivered degree will be eligible for a UK visa for the next academic year provided they intend to transition to face-to-face learning on a UK campus as soon as circumstances allow.

Such students will also be eligible to access the two-year post-study work visas as long as they are present in the UK by 6 April 2021. This news will be warmly welcomed by universities and will offer a degree of comfort to applicants considering starting a UK blended or distance degree in September.
