A deadline for restrictions, an extension for Nicola Dandridge and an overhaul for teacher training

The front pages of today’s papers will be dominated by the news that almost all Covid-19 restrictions are to be lifted in England on 19 July, pending a final review of the pandemic data next week.

The news, confirmed by prime minister Boris Johnson at a 5pm press conference yesterday, so far includes very little detail for universities. The accompanying guidance, outlining some of the specifics of “step four” of the government’s move away from restrictions, says that ministers “will change the controls that apply in…higher education institutions to maintain a baseline of protective measures while maximising attendance and minimising disruption to children and young people’s education”.
