The row over UKRI’s response to the science secretary’s letter continues
The sector news this week has been dominated by the fallout from science secretary Michelle Donelan’s letter to UK Research and Innovation, and the funder’s response to her request to suspend its equality, diversity and inclusion panel. The story still has a significant distance left to run.
Readers will know that Donelan opted to name two academics who are members of the panel, claiming that views relating to the conflict in Israel and Gaza that had been expressed online were unacceptable. Many have been upset by UKRI’s decision to suspend the panel and investigate, rather than flatly refusing the minister’s request. Among them is the University and College Union.
