Negative impacts of maintenance loan changes—and Brexit—come to light
There is no mincing of words in a Department for Education assessment of changes to next year’s student maintenance loans.
The changes, which will increase grants and loans covering living costs for undergraduate and postgraduate students by 2.8 per cent in 2023-24, and for disabled students or those needing childcare by the same amount, will “overall have a negative impact for students”. This is because, thanks to inflation, maintaining the 2020-21 value of these payments would have required an uplift of 13.7 per cent.
