UK government rules out introduction of separate scheme.
The UK government decision to rule out a post-study work visa for Scotland is “damaging” to Scottish universities and its economy, according to Humza Yousaf, the minister for Europe and international development in the Scottish Parliament.
David Mundell, the Scottish secretary at Westminster, published a written statement on 11 January, which said that although the Smith Commission suggested that post-study work routes for international students should be explored, this refers to the existing offer available to students who secure a graduate job paying a salary over £21,000 and some graduate entrepreneurs. “The Smith Commission did not recommend that the two governments discuss the re-introduction of the former Tier 1 (post study work visa) and there is no intention to do so,” Mundell wrote.
