Universities should seek funding outside of government, minister says.
Scottish universities should seek to diversify their income streams, according to a letter from Angela Constance, the education secretary.
Answering questions from Stewart Maxwell, the convener of the education and culture committee, Constance said the Scottish government was committed to the provision of free tuition for local undergraduates, but that it hoped to “grow and mature” its relationship with universities to support them in finding other sources of income. She noted that it is “hard to predict what the delivery of higher education might look in 20 years”, making “close and productive partnership” between the universities, the Scottish Funding Council and the Scottish government “crucial”.
