Rising reputations

British universities are held in high regard among world academics.

Harvard University has retained its rank as the most highly rated university in the world as judged by academics, according to the latest list published by THE. The second and third slots were occupied by the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, respectively, which each moved two places up the rankings. The rest of the top ten are American. Overall 12 British universities feature in top 100, up from ten last year. Germany comes third, with six top 100 institutions.

Imperial College London (pictured) was the third most highly rated institution in the UK, but it fell from 13th to 14th place. Other institutions in the capital moved up. University College London came 17th (up from 25th) followed by the London School of Economics at 22nd (up from 24th) and King’s College London at 31st (up from 43rd). As a city, London has the most highly ranked institutions in the list, with its five featured universities (the London Business School just scrapes into the top 100) beating Paris.
