Student numbers drop

Falling enrolment rates underline volatile university finances.

The number of students enrolled at UK universities has declined for the fourth successive year to 2.2 million, according to figures released on 14 January by the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

The 1 per cent drop in the year to 2014-15 coincides with a steady decline in the number of school-leavers in the UK. It includes a 2 per cent fall in undergraduate numbers and a 6 per cent decline in part-time student numbers. Specifically, the number of part-time undergraduates fell by 9 per cent over the same period. Postgraduate enrolments and full-time enrolments remained flat.
