Train staff to spot student distress, housing firms told

Private student accommodation providers must step up their policies on student wellbeing beyond a “tea and sympathy” approach, according to guidance from a property industry body.

The British Property Federation, a trade body for UK residential and commercial real estate, urged firms in the purpose-built student accommodation market to revamp their wellbeing policies to provide better support for students.

In a guide for private accommodation providers—backed by universities and science minister Chris Skidmore—the British Property Federation said that to comply with legal requirements around duty of care for students, providers should make sure staff are trained to deal with student wellbeing and mental health issues.
