Undergrad decline revealed on exam results day

The university admissions service UCAS has revealed that fewer students have been placed on undergraduate courses on A-level results day for the third year in a row.

On 15 August, UCAS confirmed that 408,960 undergraduates had been accepted on to courses, down 0.7 per cent compared with this time last year and down 3.5 per cent from a nine-year high of 423,880 in 2016.

The number of UK students of all ages accepted to university so far is down 1.4 per cent on 2018 at 348,890, while the number of UK 18-year-olds taking up places has dropped 0.3 per cent to 199,370.
