The Tory fetishism of the fees cap

Gordon Marsden, the shadow spokesman of further education, higher education and skills, responds to the Augar report.

The Augar review is a bit like the curate’s egg: good in parts. What this government and its ministers might do to it before it ever reaches the statute books, though, is another matter entirely.

The recommendations on restoring maintenance grants and increasing further education funding are welcome, and things for which Labour has long been calling. But some of the weakest parts of Augar’s arguments are in the area of higher education funding.
