Successful international strategies will look beyond the economic impact of student recruitment.

This week, the universities minister, Chris Skidmore, was interviewed at the Higher Education Policy Institute’s annual conference by its director, Nick Hillman. When challenged on international students, Skidmore said the government’s position was ‘softening’.

He added it was important that students were seen not only in terms of their economic impact and that they should have the opportunity to work after they finish their studies.
