In 2019, the Association of Colleges listed 294 further education colleges across the UK—248 in England—and 163 UK universities.
These figures should not be regarded as sacrosanct: college numbers are falling as a result of mergers—the English total has dropped to 231 in two years—while the university figures are liable to move upwards as new institutions acquire university status.
