Three days after a major review of higher education funding and student finance was announced, the Wales Audit Office has revealed vulnerabilities in the principality’s system.

Tuition fee subsidies in Wales have inflated beyond initial expectations, according to a report published today by the Wales Audit Office.

Undergraduates from Wales pay annual tuition fees of just over £3,500. The Welsh government then tops up the sum, which is given no matter where the Welsh undergraduate choses to study. But the amounts charged to students from Wales by universities in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are higher than the Welsh government appears to have expected.
