Mount Kenya University is training its staff to prevent the intentional or accidental release of harmful biological materials and chemicals from its laboratories.
A total of 100 MKU staff members have been trained in Thika, where the university is based, some 40 kilometres northeast of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The first training session took place last year and the second was conducted on 5-6 March.
The initiative comes after international biosafety watchdogs highlighted gaps in the safe storage and handling of pathogens and other dangerous materials in developing country laboratories.
