Premature depletion of the Kenya Medical Research Institute’s budget has resulted in an investigation of the organisation by its leading financier, The East African has reported.
On 28 March the regional weekly newspaper quoted an unnamed parastatal staff member as saying that the organisation could be in dire straits and unable to meet its financial obligations, such as paying staff salaries, as a result of its cash crisis.
KEMRI’s chief funder, the US Centers for Disease Control, will work with KEMRI to investigate why it has depleted its budget. The investigation could take a few months, according to a confidential document from the funders seen by the newspaper.
