In Africa’s universities, quantity threatens quality

All is not well at Makerere University, once called the Harvard of Africa, in the Ugandan capital of Kampala.

Makerere was closed for nearly a month after academic and administrative staff downed their tools, the climax of a row over pensions and pay.
