A chance to investigate how to hold on to democracy

The United States Agency for International Development invites social science research focusing on understanding and deterring “democratic backsliding”.

Researchers will aid the agency’s Centre of Excellence on Democracy, Human Rights and Governance to identify “theories of change” meant to uphold democracy.

Funding of US$120,000 will be awarded to successful applicants for a total duration of 12 months. Applicants are expected to produce a paper on the factors that influence democratic backsliding, a “theory matrix” of how these factors can be used to sustain democratic reform, and host two workshops to analyse the findings.
