Seven non-governmental organisations have called on Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to increase their tuberculosis research spend to ease the burden of the disease in the BRICS countries.
“Given the high TB burden in the BRICS countries, governments in these countries in particular should step up and spend more on researching better treatments for the TB that is killing many thousands of people in their countries,” the NGOs said in a joint statement.
The seven made the call during a conference on lung health in Spain on 29 October. Three of the NGOs—the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition, HIV i-Base and the Treatment Action Campaign—are either based or involved in projects in South Africa.
