The Ford Foundation, a US-based grant-making organisation, has adopted an open licensing policy that requires grantees to make their research results and outcomes freely accessible to be copied and distributed without their permission.
The policy, introduced on 1 February, requires grantees to licence copyrightable products such as white papers, research reports and websites under creative commons licence CC BY 4.0, the foundation said in a statement.
The CC BY 4.0 licence allows for material to be copied, adapted and redistributed in any format and for any purpose, including commercial use, as long as the original source is credited and any changes are indicated.
