A Portuguese foundation, supported by the wealth of an oilman and financier, is putting smiles on the faces of Africa’s Lusophone researchers.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation emerged as a supporter of African research last year when it announced it would give €100,000, (US$153 000) towards supporting Lusophone Africa to participate in EDCTP, a Europe-Africa clinical trials partnership.
The Portuguese foundation has supported research and training in Lusophone Africa since the 1960s. However, it has recently expanded this role.
