Ex-tropical institute boss takes helm of Swiss academy

Marcel Tanner, the long-serving former director of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, is the new president of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences.

Tanner started work on 1 January, taking over from astrophysicist Thierry Courvoisier from the University of Geneva.

Tanner, a parasitologist and public health specialist, ran the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute from 1997 to mid-2015. As a scientist he worked closely with the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania.
