The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded funding to a UK-based NGO to leverage more money for research and development in Africa.
The Planet Earth Institute announced on 17 November that it had won an unspecified amount of funding from the Gates Foundation for an advocacy drive to leverage funding for R&D in Africa.
The PEI is led by prominent backers of science in Africa, including Angolan philanthropist Alvaro Sobrinho and Mauritius’ president Ameenah Gurib-Fakim. The NGO said it will also try to demonstrate the worth of investing in science and technology to African governments, the private sector and global funders.
