Investigating granting councils in Africa

South Africa’s Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology and Canada’s International Development Research Centre have jointly produced the most detailed Africa-wide picture of science granting councils to date.

An interim collection of country reports was published at a workshop in Somerset West near Cape Town, South Africa, on 26-27 November. It evaluated 17 countries’ science granting councils—or lack thereof in some instances.

From the perspective of Johann Mouton, director of Crest, the picture across Africa is clear: political commitments have not translated into political action in most countries surveyed. “It is clear that big shifts and instabilities on the political level have a direct impact on science,” he said.
