A funding call focusing on African PhD students in health research with an eye on a research career is open for applications.
The Nairobi-based African Population and Health Research Centre in partnership with Canada’s International Development Research Centre will award 20 of its African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowships in 2014.
The fellowships aim to advance current PhD candidates’ research skills and help them finish their dissertation. Preference will be given to applicants whose research focuses on strengthening African health policy or systems issues.
Applicants must be nationals or permanent residents of a sub-Saharan African nation and currently enrolled for a doctorate degree at a recognised African university. In addition, applicants should draw up a detailed timeframe in order to complete their studies within two years of winning a fellowship.
Fellowships will carry a maximum value of US$10,000, which will include a completion award, laptop and software allowances, research costs and conference and workshop attendance. All successful candidates will have to attend a one-week training course at the start of the fellowship.
Selections will be made according to impact in the desired areas, originality, future involvement in research and country-specific endorsement. Female, anglophone and lusophone applicants are especially encouraged.
Applications close on 20 March.
