African research programmes come home

The Wellcome Trust officially handed over two of its African flagship health research programmes to the Nairobi-based Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Africa this week.

AESA will take up the day-to-day management of the £60 million DELTAS Africa programme as well as the Wellcome-funded part of the Human Hereditary and Health Africa (H3Africa) project. The handover was announced on 27 October as AESA officials visited London, UK, for a Grand Challenges programme conference.

“With this shift, funding decisions on Africa will be made in Nairobi, not London, and will help to not only ensure that science for Africa is led by Africa’s researchers but also that it remains relevant to the needs of Africa,” Alphonsus Neba, the DELTAS Africa programme manager, said in a statement.
