Kevin Marsh donates his US$1m prize to African science

Kevin Marsh, an Oxford University professor who lives and works in Kenya, has announced that he is donating a prize he won earlier this year in its entirety to support African science.

Marsh is giving away his US$1 million Al-Sumait Prize, awarded to him on 22 November by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences in recognition of his work in tackling African health challenges.

Last week, Marsh announced he would gift US$400,000 to the African Academy of Sciences to fund young Africans to attend international symposia, and to practise proposal-writing and pitch innovations. Discussions are ongoing on how best to spend the funds in supporting young researchers, the academy’s website reports.
