West Africans dominate Unesco-Merck awards

Researchers from West Africa came up trumps in the Unesco-Merck research awards given out at the end of last month at an event in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Four of the nine awards, which recognise African infectious disease researchers, went to scientists from the region.

The awards are supported by medical giant Merck in partnership with the African Union, Ethiopia’s ministry of health, the University of Cambridge in the UK and France’s Institute Pasteur.
