Kenyan epidemiologist wins inaugural Abdool-Karim prize

Barbara Burmen, an epidemiologist from Kenya, has won the inaugural prize in a competition sponsored by a leading South African HIV researcher, Quarraisha Abdool Karim.

The US$5,000 award is a partnership with The World Academy of Sciences aimed at honouring women researchers in the biological sciences from Africa.

Burmen is a senior research officer at the Kenya Medical Research Institute’s Centre for Global Health Research where she focuses on HIV and tuberculosis. She specialises in operations research, sharpening decision-making to make sure health interventions find their way to those who need them most.
