Grand Challenges Africa issues first Germany-backed call

The Grand Challenges Africa programme on 27 November issued its first call since Germany pledged its support. The programme announced in October 2018 that Germany’s education ministry had teamed with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the African Academy of Sciences to focus on maternal and child health related to the Sustainable Development Goals. The call seeks research into the “top priorities” for maternal and child health on the continent: pregnancy, care at birth, post-birth care, and better facilities for ill new-borns. The GC programmes provide US$100,000 seed funding, followed by US$1 million for successful pilot projects. The call is the eighth of the GCA programme, and the third to focus on maternal and child health.
