Visa refusals scupper African conference in UK

A training event for African researchers taking place in London, United Kingdom, last month saw its participants reduced from 25 to one after most of the Africans who had signed up for it could not secure visas to attend.

The event, at the London School of Economics, was linked to LSE’s Africa Summit—an annual two-day affair that aims to “engage policymakers, business leaders and researchers in discussion on solutions to Africa’s most pressing issues”.

The ill-fated side event was about blogging. But the visa challenges marred many sessions at the summit, and feed into concerns about difficulties Africans face in obtaining visas for academic travel.
