Nzimande tasks Joburg ex-VC with rescuing Vaal university

Ihron Rensburg, the former vice-chancellor of the University of Johannesburg, has been appointed administrator of the troubled Vaal University of Technology. Blade Nzimande, the minister of higher education, science and technology, announced the appointment on 14 August. Nzimande said the VUT council voluntarily stepped down after he told it of the government’s intention to place the university under administration. He called on VUT staff and students to support Rensburg to “stabilise and transform” the university. Nzimande said the move was prompted by various “governance and management problems”. This is the second time the university will be placed under administration.
