West Africa next target for desert locusts
French researchers have warned that West Africa is likely to be invaded by the desert locust scourge currently affecting East Africa. The French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) simulations suggest that the locust swarms will reach Chad by mid-June. The region is especially vulnerable at the moment, Cirad ecologist Cyril Piou warned, due to “current insecurity in large parts of the Sahel, and logistical aspects linked to the Covid-19 pandemic”.
