Ratification helps SKA observatory inch towards life, and more news

South Africa has officially ratified the convention to set up the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, the international governing body for the radio telescope the country will jointly host. Parliament ratified the convention in November 2019, after the portfolio committee on science urged MPs to ratify the treaty before the end of that year. Naledi Pandor, the minister of international relations and cooperation, signed the ratification instrument on 2 June. Pandor is a former science minister and long-term champion of the SKA. “We are determined to ensure the success of what will be the first ever large global research infrastructure hosted in Africa,” said Blade Nzimande, the current science minister, in a statement. The Netherlands and Italy had already ratified the convention which will enter into force when five partner countries, including the three hosts, have ratified it.
