Research heavyweight to take charge of Wits and other news

The University of the Witwatersrand‘s next vice-chancellor will be Zeblon Vilakazi, a nuclear physicist and former deputy vice-chancellor in charge of research. Vilakazi was appointed on 25 June and will succeed Adam Habib on 1 January 2021. Wits said that its publications doubled during Vilakazi’s tenure. “[He] is the epitome of a world-class researcher who is globally recognised for his scientific work, and for his contribution towards developing higher education in Africa,” said Isaac Shongwe, Wits Council chairman, in a statement.
