African science academies call for Ukraine ceasefire

Conflict “threatens network of collaboration” for continent and world

African science academies have called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and for the protection of academic and research institutions.

The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) released its official position on the war in the Ukraine on 28 March.

“At a time when scientists are seeking solutions to global challenges with increased urgency and in close collaboration, this conflict threatens our network of collaboration with serious outcomes for our world and therefore for Africa, and for Africans,” it says.

It calls for academic facilities to be protected, for the fair treatment of refugees, and for science organisations to offer work opportunities to scientists displaced by the conflict.

NASAC further calls on science academies and academicians to use evidence-based information to combat fake or unreliable information.

“We call for an immediate ceasefire, and for rational dialogue and negotiation leading to peace in the region,” the statement reads.
