HIV gel trials to benefit from US grant

An ongoing HIV/Aids microbicide trial in South Africa will benefit from a large grant from the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

The US-based Eastern Virginia Medical School and CONRAD, a leading reproductive health research organisation, announced on 2 December that they will receive up to $80 million over five years through the US Agency for International Development towards the trial.

The trial is of tenofovir, which may reduce the spread of HIV. It is following 3,000 women in Southern Africa.
