SA government and Gates tackle sanitation

South Africa's Department of Science and Technology has made a deal with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to boost research targeting sanitation innovations.

The deal, announced on 24 March, will see the DST commit R30 million (US$2.8m) and the Gates Foundation US$1m towards field tests on sanitation technologies.

The technologies to be tested have come out of the Gates Foundation’s “Reinvent the toilet challenge”, which was launched in July 2011.
