BRICS bloc launches coronavirus research fund

Grouping includes countries with some of the world’s highest infection figures

The BRICS bloc—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—has issued a call for proposals to promote research collaboration on measures to fight Covid-19.

The five countries have some of the world’s highest infection figures, with exponential growth in cases underway in Brazil, South Africa and Russia.

The funding call falls under the BRICS Science Technology and Innovation Framework Programme. At least three of the five member countries need to be represented in each project.

The thematic focus of the call covers new diagnostics, vaccines and drug development, SARS-Cov-2 genetics and epidemiology, and comorbidities.

Funding for projects will vary according to each country’s national funding organisation. Projects are expected to begin at the start of 2021 and last for two years.

Applications close on 18 August.
