South Africa pumps money into industry-academia links

South Africa will spend R500 million (US$53.7m) over three years to build partnerships between research and industry, science minister Derek Hanekom announced during parliament’s science budget vote on 16 May.

“The idea is to strengthen links with industry. A real decline in the country’s R&D expenditure has been on the private sector side,” Hanekom said.

Last month, the government’s annual R&D survey revealed a 9.7 per cent drop in business R&D expenditure in 2009/10. This caused South Africa’s R&D spend to drop for the first time in a decade.
