The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) has joined 13 other national science academies in a call to world leaders to address drug-resistant infections and to use science for development.
The statement was aimed at the G8 summit in Ireland on 17 to 18 June.
It highlights the role of science, technology and innovation in sustainable development and says a growing world population, projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, makes the challenges acute.
