The vice-chancellor of Rhodes University in South Africa will step down later this year and take up a post managing the US-based Andrew W Mellon Foundation’s international funding programmes.
Saleem Badat announced his decision to resign on 3 March. The following day the foundation confirmed his appointment to a newly created role as programme director for international higher education and strategic projects.
Writing on the university’s website, Badat cites no specific reasons for leaving Rhodes, but concedes that eight years of 80-hours-plus working weeks had taken a toll on his family.
